　　英語裏到處是容易混淆的字，在職場上，我們每天都需要處理大量文書工作，包括回覆電郵、擬定合約等等。在處理文書工作的時候，一不小心就可能將串法相近的字混淆，分分鐘造成溝通上的誤會。你知道 ‘staff’和 ‘staffer’在用法上有甚麼不同嗎？‘Person’、 ‘persons’、 ‘people’、 ‘peoples’ 這幾個單字的意思和用法，你又分得清楚嗎？ 不想在辦公的時候「擺烏龍」用錯字的話，趕緊看下去吧！

 

‘Staff’  VS  ‘Staffer’

 

　　‘Staff (n.)’ 在英語中指的是「員工」，但有的時候你會在新聞中看到 ‘staffer (n.)’ ，這同樣指的是「員工」，也同樣是一個名詞，那麼，這兩個詞之間的分別是甚麼？

 

● Staff (n.) 

‘Staff’ 指的是「所有的僱員」，也就是一個機構的「全體工作人員」

 

例句一：

Thankfully, our staff has already invested considerable time preparing for online learning.

值得慶幸的是，我們的員工已經投入了大量時間準備在線學習。

 

例句二：

Every person on our staff is committed to providing excellent customer service and producing high-quality products and services.

我們員工中的每一個人都致力於提供卓越的客戶服務並生產高質量的產品和服務。

 

● Staffer (n.)

 

　　一般而言，‘staff’ 不可用來指個別員工，我們可以說某人是 ‘a staff member’，但卻不能說他是 ‘a staff’。 ‘Staffer’ 這個單數名詞則可用來表示「一個僱員」，多用在政府組織與媒體公司，在新聞中也是挺常見的。現今，很多字典都已將‘staffer’列為正規英語， 然而，亦有一些比較傳統的英語使用者認為 ‘staffer’ 屬於非正式用語，他們會比較傾向使用 ‘staff member’或 ‘staff person’ 。

 

例句一：

Congrats to Janice, our staffer of the week!

祝賀我們本周的員工 Janice！

 

例句二：

Our staffer Chris has management authority over our editorial and writing departments.

我們的員工Chris擁有編輯部和寫作部的管理權。

 

‘Person’、 ‘Persons’  VS  ‘People’、 ‘Peoples’

● Person (n.) 、Persons (n.)

 

　　‘Person’是‘people’的單數詞（singular form），‘persons’則是‘person’的複數詞（plural form）。跟‘people’ 不同的地方是： ‘People’一般用於指示一個「數量大的群體」或「不確定人數的群體」，而 ‘persons’是用於強調「個人」或「幾個人」的情況。

 

　　在現代英語，我們一般習慣用 ‘people’作為「人」的複數，僅在少數情況下用 ‘persons’ 作為「人」的複數（’persons’多用於法律文件或正式的公函中）。

 

例子：

missing persons（失蹤人口）

displaced persons （難民）

persons of interest （疑犯）

 

例句一：

Four persons were recruited, but only two showed up. 

我們招募了四個人，但只出現了兩個。

 

例句二：

The insurance company contended that there were three persons riding on a motorcycle and there was a violation of the policy conditions.

保險公司辯稱，摩托車上共載有三人，違反了保單條件。

You can limit the number of people who can sign up for each event to prevent too many people in the conference room. 

你可以限制每個活動可以註冊的人數，以防止會議室中的人數過多。

 

● Peoples (n.)

當 ‘people’解作一個「種族」或「民族」時， ‘peoples’則用於強調多於一個這樣的群體（i.e.「多個種族」）

 

例句：

He has played an active role in ensuring that peoples of different skin color and origin can live side by side.

他積極地確保不同膚色和血統的人民能夠和平相處。
